Tour through the coffee factory

On the day that the coffee is picked, it is directly processed in the factory. There are two coffee factories at the Ijen Plateau, one near Sempol and one in Blawan. The factory at Blawan runs already when harvest is small, while the factory at Sempol starts running as yields increase.

Water is most important in the factory

The Dutch chose the place where to built the Blawan coffee factory carefully; near a big water source. In the dry period the water source is surprisingly even bigger than during the raining season. Water is for example used for transporting the coffee from the assembly to the first process: peeling. Just before peeling, low quality beans get seperated, because less quality coffee beans sick to the bottom of the water tank. Although water is important in the process the final goal is to dry the beans up to 11% water only. If you want to know more in detail about processing coffee, check out the page 'processing in the factory'.
The factory was built in 1895, as the same time as the house of the administrator was built. This house is now in use by Catimor Homestay. Many parts of the factory are still original.

In both factories, Blawan and Sempol, you can get a guided tour of approximately two hours. The price for a tour in Sempol includes a plantation tour(Rp. 25,000). A coffee tour in Blawan costs Rp 15,000 per person. The coffee factory will always be visited after 3 pm, because the factory waits for the power to turn on.
